Comparison Essay

Everyone have had to overcome an emotional situation, where something has happened and you just have to, “Get over it” and , ” Move on”. In the book , “The Giver” by Lois Lowery and the song, “Praying”, by Kesha both represent why it is important to move on and keep moving for yourself, and maybe even others. In the novel The Giver, Jonas must overcome his feelings for his family to save Gabriel, and to move on from the community and sameness. In the song Praying, Kesha must overcome her feelings for her previous record company and move on to pursue her career. In both text the main character must pass through an emotional boundary, we learn it may be a tough decision but it still has to happen to make thing the best as possible for everyone, and it makes them stronger in the long run.

A common theme in the novel and the song is making decisions is tough, but it is important to make these choices to move on. In The Giver, Jonas had to deal with the fact that people do everything in the community because they think it is right, not because of morals. But when his father is going to release Gabe, he must take action. He takes Gabriel but then he must make a Big Decision, to leave the Community and risk his life and Gabriel’s and may not see his family ever again or to stay and let Gabriel die. But he leaves and he moves on for himself and Gabe. In the song Praying, Kesha must leave her old record company because they aren’t allowing her to have the creative freedom she wants. When she states,” You brought the flames and put me through hell, now I have learned to fend for myself”, basically means she left the company to pursue what she really wanted to do instead of staying where she was, “safe”( Job wise ).

The Giver and Praying may have some similarities but they are different to, one takes place in a futuristic society where Jonas must forgive his families and others for being heartless freaks and Kesha lives in the real world where she must forgive her record company for doing what they thought was right. Jonas had to move on from the community and Kesha had to move on from her previous record company. Basically they are the same but when it comes down to details, they are separate.

Both the Giver and Praying are beautiful pieces of literature that speak about tough decisions and moving on. Whether it is moving on from your home are moving on from a record company, both decisions were tough to make but they finally moved on for the better, for themselves and others.

Literary Essay on, “The Giver”

A Lois Lowery novel named, “The Giver”, takes place in a futuristic society on earth, a place where everyone lives in sameness, there is no race, color, religion, emotions, or animals all to prevent conflict amongst people to attempt to make a perfect society. Jonas, a 12 year old boy receives his new position(job), that gives him the ability to see past sameness, which creates a conflict with Jonas, he must choose to live a life hidden and secretive or to try to opens everyone’s eyes to the truth. One important message of the story is that memory is important, even though there is some cons with the privilege, but it’s what makes people, people.

The theme of Memory is important starts to form in the beginning of the story by making Jonas clueless to little details. Like when Jonas discovering color(apple), he couldn’t describe because he lacked the memory to know what it was. In the book, Jonas said the apple had,” The same size and shape, a perfect sphere. The same non-descript shade, about the same as his tunic”, that is all he could describe. He also had to lack freedom because everyone believes in precision, not realizing that it violates freedom of speech. Little details like that all go to the fact of the memories are important.

The theme continued to form in chapters 6-10, Jonas i still clueless to color when he notices Fiona’s hair on his way to the ceremony. It is there he is elected receiver of memory and his opinion begins to change/alter. When he began to visit the giver he had many of experiences of memories including color, sledding, oceans and other. In chapter 7, Jonas says, “I’m so weighted with them”, where he makes an inference that the memories are having an effect on him. In the book, when Jonas first experiences color, he describes the thing as ,”The flash of brilliant color, but gone again, returning to their flat and blank shade”.  These two text references all goes back to the theme, the memories may weigh him down but it opens his eyes to why he needs the memories to make decisions for himself and others like when the giver says someone needs the memories to help the council make decisions or When Jonas choses to stop taking the pills.

The theme in the end of the giver final comes apparent, when Jonas decides to leave the community based on his new found information and emotions. He gets to use the memories to keep him and Gabriel alive, in chapter 22, it says he uses the memories to get the feeling of food to keep the to ,”full’. Basically the big idea is about why memories are important.

All the text evidence leads to the fact on why memories are important because the give you emotion, bias, opinion, and imagination, the book represents this through showing Jonas’s clueless-ness through the beginning of the book, and Then him developing with the memories and deciphering what they mean, then ending the book with Jonas taking  his feeling and knowledge to make a big decision. I believe my argument is valid and I hope it swayed your opinion.     😉

Introduction to The Giver

The book takes place in an alternate society of earth, almost futuristic. The community is observed by the government with many announcements accusing nameless people of illegal things and other numerous reminders. The lack of cars and only bikes almost makes you think the book takes place in the past but on page 2 it talks about pilots and a big black jet flying over the heads of there community. In my opinion this place reminds me of a more developed Africa with keep some rituals.

In the book, Jonas is a 11, turning 12 year old boy growing up to face the problems many of the community’s adults have to. According to tradition, when you turn twelve you and other peers are given a ceremony to which the committee decides you role/ job. Jonas is confused also by the stirrings which he experience on page 37-40. Jonas is a very friendly boy having two best friends (mentioned in the book, Asher and Fiona), who he is very close with and he is very curious what happens with this society and how it got to the way it is now.

Bag Ban (Final Draft)

Newscast: The children of BMS walking around the school with broken backs and sore arms. Paper cuts and bruises, it’s been like this for years. One change in Fwcs rules could stop all of these aches and pains, Bring back backpacks and eliminate problems for students. But will it make the schools more unsafe, people have devised a plan to fix both of these problems, clear backpacks. ” I think this a great idea”, says one student.

Let’s go over why Fwcs has put a ban on backpacks on a person in the first place. Schools in the US have nationwide try to grow this ban as well, when a backpack is in its locker it is tucked away, its contents are to, But if someone has there backpack with them, its open to others. We’re talking about unsafe products, weapons, drugs, alcohol, and anything else illegal. A teacher will least likely know what are in these kids bags unless they do a mandatory bag check which invades privacy and wastes time.  According to www.nytimes.com, ” In early January, Annin Middle School’s principal, Joan Tonnarelli, banned backpacks from classrooms, hallways and the cafeteria after teachers voted for an immediate ban. The teachers contended that they were hazardous because the unwary can trip on straps of backpacks left on floors or protruding from under desks. Mar 14, 1996″. This was a responsible decision but there problem still stands, students and some teachers want the ban removed and limitations added to what backpacks can be worn. “I agree with their decision but there are other alternatives” said the student from paragraph one. Its affective and ineffective at the same time and by writing this article we’re informing you this may change with peoples new solution.

With the new solution of clear backpacks everyone will be equal, it will help kids carry items easier, and will cut time on locker stops or maybe even get rid of the need for lockers. The clear backpack will let all school staff what you have on your person so it will make the school more safe and easier. There is also the problem of money. Fwcs CEO Wendy Robertson says, ” It isn’t cost effective to pay for all the students backpacks and it will be unlikely that every students parent(s) will partake in the new act of buying one”.

As a great scientist Albert Einstein said,” you can solve a problem with the same level of thinking that created it”. “Fwcs made a good choice but there is a better option and they should take it into serious consideration”, said the student from paragraph 1 and 2 ,”Fwcs should take this matter seriously like they did with the ban’s on the bags in the first place”.

” I’m a reader “…

The last book i read was a biography about Jon Cryer,  the co-star on two-and a half men. The book was a excellent read and i recommend it to anyone who comes upon it. Today i got a new book from black hawks library, it is called,” How I Live Now”. I got this book because it says the book is a sci-fi/romance, i found it in the sci-fi section so i’ll get enough action while some loving on the side. I believe this will be a good book and i wish to continue to read it.
