Everyone have had to overcome an emotional situation, where something has happened and you just have to, “Get over it” and , ” Move on”. In the book , “The Giver” by Lois Lowery and the song, “Praying”, by Kesha both represent why it is important to move on and keep moving for yourself, and maybe even others. In the novel The Giver, Jonas must overcome his feelings for his family to save Gabriel, and to move on from the community and sameness. In the song Praying, Kesha must overcome her feelings for her previous record company and move on to pursue her career. In both text the main character must pass through an emotional boundary, we learn it may be a tough decision but it still has to happen to make thing the best as possible for everyone, and it makes them stronger in the long run.
A common theme in the novel and the song is making decisions is tough, but it is important to make these choices to move on. In The Giver, Jonas had to deal with the fact that people do everything in the community because they think it is right, not because of morals. But when his father is going to release Gabe, he must take action. He takes Gabriel but then he must make a Big Decision, to leave the Community and risk his life and Gabriel’s and may not see his family ever again or to stay and let Gabriel die. But he leaves and he moves on for himself and Gabe. In the song Praying, Kesha must leave her old record company because they aren’t allowing her to have the creative freedom she wants. When she states,” You brought the flames and put me through hell, now I have learned to fend for myself”, basically means she left the company to pursue what she really wanted to do instead of staying where she was, “safe”( Job wise ).
The Giver and Praying may have some similarities but they are different to, one takes place in a futuristic society where Jonas must forgive his families and others for being heartless freaks and Kesha lives in the real world where she must forgive her record company for doing what they thought was right. Jonas had to move on from the community and Kesha had to move on from her previous record company. Basically they are the same but when it comes down to details, they are separate.
Both the Giver and Praying are beautiful pieces of literature that speak about tough decisions and moving on. Whether it is moving on from your home are moving on from a record company, both decisions were tough to make but they finally moved on for the better, for themselves and others.
